361-year-old repository of oriental medicine Western medical mission began 126 years ago Daegu, Medical capital of Korea in 2009.

1658

Yangnyeongsi Market, a repository of traditional oriental medicine

1893

"American Drugstore" opened near Yangnyeongsi Market, Daegu, in 1893, as part of Western medical mission.

1899

Modern medical services began with the establishment of "Jejungwon."

1908

Dongin Clinic opened, which later became Kyungpook National University Hospital.

2008 ~ 2009

Daegu’s Proclamation as a Medicity!

  • Became the first Korean local government to establish the Medical Industry Department
  • Designated Suseong Medical District in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone and began to strive to attract outstanding overseas medical institutions
  • Proclaimed "Daegu as the medical capital of Korea"
  • Yeungnam University Hospital designated as a regional center for respiratory diseases
  • Brought in and built a national high-tech medical complex

2010 ~ 2013

Established the foundation to Become a Medicity!

  • Established the Korean Traditional Medical Experience Center
  • Medicity Daegu Customer awarded in the Satisfaction Brand Awards by Hankyung Business

  • Established the High-Tech Medical Industry Bureau

2014 ~ 2016

The First City to Have Attracted 20 Thousand Overseas Medical Tourists outside the Seoul Metropolitan Area in Korea

  • Selected in the leading medical technology promotion project to attract overseas patients (cancer treatment technology-Kyungpook National University Hospital)
  • Jointly established a hospital in an overseas country (K-Beauty Medical Center in Xi’an, China)
  • Awarded in the Korea Master Brand Awards (in the medical city category)
  • The Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Council was renamed the Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Center
  • Completed the Oriental Medicine & Ecological Wellbeing Experience Center in Yangnyeongsi Market
  • Selected in the leading medical technology promotion project to attract overseas patients (respiratory disease treatment-Yeungnam University Hospital)
  • Korea’s first city to operate insurance services for safety of medical tourists (medical accident indemnity insurance for foreign patients)
  • The first city to have attracted 20 thousand foreign medical tourists outside the Seoul metropolitan area in Korea (2016)

2017

Taking a Leap Forward as a Central Player in Korea’s Medical Tourism

  • The Ministry of SMEs and Startups completed the designation of the Medical Tourism Startup Support Center in Daegu Metropolitan City.
  • Medicity Daegu awarded in the Korea Master Brand Awards (for three consecutive years)
  • Established Korea’s first cooperative of medical interpreters (two spots)
  • The first successful arm transplant surgery in Korea (second in Asia)
  • Ranked second in the medical tourism cluster project contest, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism
  • BL Plastic Surgery, one of Daegu’s leading medical institutions, entered the Chinese market (Wuhan).
  • Three leading medical institutions of Daegu entered the Kazakhstani market (Karaganda).
  • Established Medicity Daegu’s overseas promotion center in Karaganda, Kazakhstan
  • Established Medicity Daegu’s overseas promotion center in Da Nang, Vietnam

2018

10 Years of Medicity Daegu Medical Tourism The Hub of Global Medical Tourism

  • Korea’s first city to host the Asia Pacific Anti-Aging Course (APAAC)
  • Medicity Daegu awarded in the Korea Master Brand Awards (for four executive years)
  • Ranked first in the medical tourism cluster project contest, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (for two consecutive years)
  • Established Medicity Daegu’s overseas promotion center in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
  • Established Medicity Daegu’s overseas promotion center in Novosibirsk, Russia
  • Established Medicity Daegu’s overseas promotion center in Irkutsk, Russia
  • Established Medicity Daegu’s overseas promotion center in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
  • Established Medicity Daegu’s overseas promotion center in Jakarta, Indonesia

2019

Innovation, Research and Service Network Expansion Devotion for Another New Decade

  • Medicity Daegu awarded in the Korea Master Brand Awards (for five consecutive years)
  • Ranked first in the medical tourism cluster project contest, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (for three consecutive years)
  • Medi Expo Korea 2019 witnessed the greatest ever success
    • Participation of 300 buyers from 23 countries, business talk for exports worth $59,600,000 export contracts worth $19,200,000, 33,027 visitors (up 5.7 % from the previous year)
    • Participants included businessmen, politicians and medical tourism agents from different countries including China, Russia, the US and Mongolia.
    • Operated sideline events such as Medical Tourism Conference, Medical Tourism Night, B2B meetings and a tour to Daegu’s leading medical institutions
    • Overseas broadcasts, such as the state-run Chinese broadcasting network CHTV, Sakha National Broadcasting Company of Russia and Chunichi Shimbun of Japan, visited and filmed Medi Expo Korea 2019.
  • Medicity Daegu’s medical counseling session held in Irkutsk, Russia (About 80 people made medical appointments to get medical services in Daegu.)
  • Medicity Daegu’s medical tourism promotion and information sessions held in Bangkok, Thailand and Hanoi, Vietnam
  • In Irkutsk and Novosibirsk of Russia, Medicity Daegu’s overseas promotion centers collaborated with local agencies to attract overseas patients.
  • In Erdenet and Darkhan, Mongolia, Medicity Daegu held medical tourism promotion and information sessions; managed medical volunteer programs; did medical volunteer work; signed a medical tourism business agreement; and opened its overseas promotion center.
  • V Plastic Surgery, one of Daegu’s leading medical institutions, entered the Chinese market (Shenyang).
